BTS Announces Free Comeback Concert at Gwanghwamun Square

BTS will hold a free comeback concert at Seoul’s Gwanghwamun Square on March 20, coinciding with the release of their fifth full album, ARIRANG. The performance will mark BTS’s first full-group stage in three years and nine months following the group’s military service hiatus, and is reportedly the first solo concert by a specific K-pop group at Gwanghwamun Square.

Seoul has conditionally approved BTS’s planned comeback show at Gwanghwamun Square, with final authorization contingent on passing a formal safety management review and implementing measures to reduce congestion and traffic disruption in central Seoul. City officials expect a large influx of visitors and said they will coordinate closely with police and other relevant agencies to manage crowds. Seoul also announced advanced on-site inspections to prevent unfair practices such as excessive accommodation pricing, aiming to reduce inconvenience for residents and visitors.

As planning advances, Seoul City, Jongno District, and BTS’s agency HYBE are reportedly discussing expanded viewing options and fan activities to manage demand. The industry expects approximately 200,000 fans to gather, more than 11 times the estimated capacity of Gwanghwamun Square (about 18,000). To allow more fans to enjoy the event safely, organizers are expected to install and utilize large electronic displays around the area (including at prominent nearby buildings) to broadcast the performance to overflow crowds.

Side activities for fans are also under consideration, with events reportedly expected at Seoul Plaza and at multiple locations in Yeouido, including Yeouido Park and Yeouido Han River Park, echoing the model used during BTS’s 10th anniversary celebrations, which drew hundreds of thousands of participants.

The album and concert announcements come amid extraordinary global demand for BTS’s comeback. Early reporting suggests strong album sales momentum, and the group’s newly announced 79-show world tour beginning in April is already seeing multiple dates sell out rapidly. The scale of demand has even become a political talking point abroad, with Mexico’s president publicly urging Korean leaders to help secure additional BTS concert dates in the country.

With a heritage-branded Seoul mega-event and a world tour already driving intense demand, BTS’s 2026 plans are likely to translate into significant economic gains for BTS, HYBE, and Korea’s tourism and entertainment sectors.
